DEFINITION / VALUE

Full energy consumption is renewable,
• either purchased renewable energy (direct purchases from specific generators e.g. through PPAs, retail purchases from suppliers/utilities, or unbundled purchase of energy attribute certificates) or
• production of renewable energy in own facilities.


PROOF POINT / VERIFICATION

• Energy attribute certificates that meet GHG Protocol Scope 2 Quality Criteria, such as Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs, I-RECs) or Guarantees of Origin (GOs).
• Contracts for electricity  (e.g. PPAs) where electricity attribute certificates do not exist or are not required for a usage claim.

Energy effectiveness

KPI

Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) ≤ 1.4  for data centers.

DEFINITION / VALUE

Energy effectiveness of operation should be no higher than 1.4 PUE (equal to iMason DCPI Efficiency grade B).
• PUE value is calculated by dividing the total power consumption of a data center by the amount of energy used by the IT equipment inside it indicating effectiveness in energy use.
• Any energy used by equipment sending back energy to the grid may be omitted from the calculation.

PROOF POINT / VERIFICATION

• Actual measured PUE as defined in ISO 30134-2 international standard. (12 month rolling value).
• For new data centers, a designed PUE (dPUE) value may be used until an actual PUE value is available.

Low carbon emissions
(grid based)

KPI

Carbon Usage Effectiveness (CUE) ≤ 0.19 kg CO2e/kWh IT.

DEFINITION / VALUE

Carbon emissions should be less than 0.19 kg CO2 equivalent per kWh used for IT equipment based on use of renewable energy, efficient use of energy and geographical emission factors (equal to iMason DCPI Environmental grade A).
• CUE = PUE * CEF. Total CO2 emissions caused by the Total Data Center Energy / IT Equipment Energy used.

PROOF POINT / VERIFICATION

• Own account using energy efficiency value (PUE) combined with official available data (CEF) from IEA (EPA in US).
• CEF = Location-based Carbon Emission Factor sourced from International Energy Agency (IEA- country data) or EPA for the US.
